On This Day 11th November 2025

I had the great pleasure to attend the annual Service of Remembrance at the lonely war memorial sited at Thorpe le Fallows, near Sturton by Stow, Lincolnshire.

Despite the inclement weather, there was a record turnout of thirty folk to make this annual event a huge success.

The service was most expertly marshalled by Peter Garland, Michael Credland laid a wreath on behalf of the Lincoln WFA branch, who maintain the memorial each year, and a representative from Sturton by Stow Parish Council also attended and laid a wreath.

Attendees volunteered to lay a poppy cross for each of the men named on the memorial. They are:

Baldock, Frank
Bradley, G
Burkitt, F S
Clayton, J
Goddard, A E
Jackson, J T
Martin, W
Preston, Rudolph Arthur
Sanderson, H

The memorial was unveiled in 1919 and stands on the site of the now demolished Mary Magdalene Church. It consists of a Celtic cross set on a long shaft and two octagonal plinths and base. Fleur-de-lys carved on the upper plinth. The whole is surrounded by wrought iron railings and a gate.

Michael Credland laid a wreath on behalf of the Lincoln WFA branch.
